FCC To Redefine How It Regulates Broadband – NPR

Consumers may see increased access to the Internet following an announcement Thursday by Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski of a plan to give the FCC limited legal jurisdiction to regulate broadband. But the plan still requires input from the public and will likely face legal challenges from the telecommunications industry, which has resisted further regulation.

In a statement, Genachowski outlined the challenge facing a commission that was created more than 75 years ago: “how to apply the time-honored purposes of the Communications Act to our 21st century communications platform — broadband Internet — access to which is generally provided by the same companies that provide telephone and cable television services.”

Genachowski is trying to assert the FCC’s power to provide the same guarantees to Internet service for all Americans that it has over telephone service.
